ESD Bag Testing

If it looks like a Shielding Bag, It may not be a Shielding Bag!

RMV Technology Group, LLC, an American Council of Independent Laboratory &  Union Internationale des Laboratories Independants recognized 3rd party ESD materials and packaging testing firm performs a wide variety of ESD shielding bag testing for the semiconductor, disk drive, automotive, aerospace/defense, space technology, pharmaceutical, drug delivery and industrial sectors to ANSI/ESD STM11.31-2006, ANSI/ESD STM11.11-2006, ANSI/ESD STM11.12-2007, Mil-STD-3010A-2005 and Dr. Kolyer High Voltage Discharge Testing and customer driven requirements.

The purpose of an Electrostatic Discharge safe shielding bag is to attenuate the product it protects from electrostatic fields and high voltage discharges along with providing mitigation from charge generation and build up. Type 1 Aluminum bags can act as shrouds for space hardware and offer protection from harmful EMI/RFI hazards outside an ESD Protected Area during shipping or long term storage requirements. Individual selection of packaging materials depends upon the specific product and application requirements of the user.  For example, a one way shipment of a product or part may require minimal protection before its removal, whereas the storage or reuse of a part or product over a period of time will require a much more robust packaging container for long term requirements.  A user’s lack of knowledge base on the specific applications and types of materials to be utilized for packaging can have a serious impact on a product’s protection.  Therefore, testing or validaiton of a package becomes a critical step for the end user who is receiving and ESD sensitive device from the manufacturer. There is a strong likelihood that improper packaging or selection of material types will take place without verification or validation of a shielding bag’s performance. For space-related, medical device and aerospace/defense applications, it is imperative that users are knowledgeable in the differences between antistats and static dissipative materials. It is our experience that this knowledge base is lacking in the aerospace/defense industries due to the rampant outsourcing that is occurring in today’s marketplace as well as the fast paced suspect counterfeiting of packaging materials from unchecked sources.  Therefore, flexible packaging and film ESD testing is absolutely essential for qualification of a supplier, validation of your current packaging sources and for research and development of new advanced materials for specific or long term applications.

ESD Standards for Testing:
ESDA JEDEC
IEC INDA
EIA Military Standards
NFPA Specific Applications Testing
AATCC ASTM
