ESD LAB Questions that one should consider during the selection process

in choosing a Test Lab/Consultant?

1. Does the potential Laboratory that you are investigating have their own lab? If so, where is it located? In their house? If so, then you should visit the facility to determine the adherence to standardized and traceable requirements for testing. In their Garage? If so, then you should again visit the facility to determine adherence to standardized, traceable and cleanliness/contamination requirements. In a commercial facility? Then ask to see a company video of the facility or schedule a tour which is even better.

2. Do the lab technician(s) or consultants work for other companies? In other words, do they have divided responsibilities?

3. Does the consultant own his/her equipment? If so, does the consultant use calibrated equipment by a 3^rd party or is the equipment self-calibrated? Does the consultant rent or borrow equipment and if so, is the equipment calibrated? Is the equipment lab grade? Just ask the potential supplier to provide you with a list of equipment that will be used in the testing or in the auditing for customer requirements.

4. Does the consultant or test lab employ US citizens due to ITAR requirements for any DOD or military requirements? This is a very important question for a potential laboratory or consultant as any Research & Development or Product Development can be construed as ITAR related and therefore the nationality of personnel becomes critical as to whether any laws may be broken.

5. What are the potential supplier lab certifications? What are the lab approvals to operate as an independent 3rd party laboratory?
