ESD LAB Questions that one should consider during the selection process in choosing a Test Lab/Consultant?
1. Does the potential Laboratory that you are investigating have their own lab? If so, where is it located? In their house? In their Garage? In a commercial facility? Set up an appointment to visit their facility especially if someone is operating out of their house or garage.
2. Do the lab technician(s) or consultants work for other companies? In other words, do they have divided responsibilities? Find out. Ask questions. Companies today require NDAs from employees due to proprietary technology and this information could put your company at risk if testing a product or material that the potential consultant may already be working for.
3. Does the consultant own their equipment? If so, do they use calibrated equipment by a 3rd party or do they self calibrate? Do they borrow or rent equipment and if so, is the equipment calibrated? Renting equipment today is not usually calibrated unless you pay extra. Many consultants do not want to do this to keep their costs down. Ask questions. It is your right as a potential customer. When the price is very low, you should ask even more questions. When something looks like a really good price, it just may not be.
4. Does your potential test lab/consultant employ US citizens due to ITAR requirements when engaging in military or DOD related work? This may put your company at risk if the potential Test Lab/Consultant is not ITAR compliant.
5. What are your company certifications? What are your approvals to operate as a 3rd party laboratory?
Ask questions. Be engaged. Do not be afraid to ask these questions as many labs and consultants are persons recently out of work due to the recession and you may be putting your company at risk by not completely vetting your potential service supplier/vendor.
