Figure 1: Tu-Pod in Space (Courtesy Amin Djamshidpour, Co-Founder Teton Aerospace) CubeSats are relatively inexpensive when compared to traditional vehicle-size satellites. Since their inception, CubeSat spacecraft have shown functional success rates ranging from 40% to 75% for launch and deployment phases. According to the International Journal of Aerospace Engineering, … [Read more...]

This article is the second and final part of Static Control Resilient Flooring Qualification Procedures Ensure Space and Defense ESD Compliance.
ANSI/ESD STM97.2
This critical standard test method attests to the static control resilient flooring’s ability to minimize charge buildup and provides the user with traceable data to assign a voltage flooring rating within the EPA.

Risk Mitigation: Advanced ESD Instrumentation for Qualification
Testing of Static Shielding Bags
April 1, 2019
First to Present on Suspect Counterfeit and Non-Compliant ESD Materials in the Supply Chain at the NASA Quality Leadership Forum 2010, Cape Canaveral, Florida, Bob Vermillion talks about Static Shielding Bags and this high volume item requires first article testing. No longer can a Supplier Technical Data Sheet serve as proof of compliance for a static control shielding bag.

Due to the rapid densification of ESD sensitive devices (ESDS), static control resilient flooring (ESD flooring) has found its way into FAA towers, operating room theatres, MRI/CT scan flooring areas, aircraft terminals, IT data centers, Navy ships, space & defense flight lines, call centers, medical device manufacturing, pharmaceutical delivery and the … [Read more...]

Due to suspect counterfeit and noncompliant static control gloves buys from online, catalogs and offshore sourcing, one cannot rely upon a supplier Technical Data Sheet as proof of compliance.
Contrary to many government and industry practices, static control or electrostatic discharge (ESD) products cannot be qualified by a visual inspection process. Today, the risk of suspect counterfeit or non-compliant consumables is on par with that of electrical, electronic, and electromechanical (EEE) ESD sensitive devices in the product life cycle.
About the Author
Headquartered at NASA Ames Research Center since 2008, Bob Vermillion, the foremost Leader in Engineered ESD Materials for Mission Critical Flight Hardware Safety and SME in Electrostatics was named the ESD Technical Authority for NASA in 2018.
Bob Vermillion, CPP, Fellow, is a Certified ESD & Product Safety Engineer-iNARTE with proven subject matter expertise in the mitigation of Triboelectrification for Space, Lunar and Mars surfaces and troubleshooting of robotics, systems and materials for aerospace & defense, hand held devices, wearables, medical device, pharmaceutical, automotive and semiconductor sectors.
A long standing member of the ESD Association Standards Committe, Bob has co-authored several ANSI level ESD documents and is the former Vice-chair of the ESDA Aerospace & Defense under the leadership of NASA-Langley. Vermillion formerly served on the BoD with iNARTE until its merger with RABQSA. Since 2014, Bob is an active contributor with the NASA IAWG for ESD.
RMV’s ESD laboratory is the largest on a NASA site supporting NASA, DOE, MDA, DLA, NGC, Santa Clara University, UCB Space Sciences Laboratory, and others. RMV is a member of the DOD ESD Committee, NASA ESD Interagency Working Group and iNARTE® Advisory Board Member of Exemplar Global, an ASQ international accreditation body.
As Founder and Co-Chair of the SAE EEE Parts Packaging Group Sub-Committee, Bob is the Industry Leader for ESD Packaging Engineering with induction into the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP) College of Fellows in 2002. In 2007, Bob's ESD packaging engineering design for the US Navy was a LASER pump module shielding package (long term storage) for the DOD. The Ameristar 1st Place design by Vermillion incorporated a unique suspect counterfeit watermark, the precursor to advanced methods in use today. In 2018, Vermillion was awarded the James A Russell Lifetime Achievement for Packaging Engineering innovations without financial gain for the Warfighter.
That same year, Bob developed the iNARTE® Certified Aerospace & Defense ESD Engineer training program with 3rd party accreditation, adopted by NASA, MDA, Sandia Labs, DOE, UC Berkeley, UCLA, JPL/NASA, NGC and the US Navy. In 2019, Bob was inducted into the Military Packaging Hall of Fame.
Speaking engagements include Suspect Counterfeit Training Presentations/Seminars for NASA, DoD, DOE, GIDEP, California Polytechnic University, Loyola University, Oak RIdge National Laboratory, UC Berkeley and others. Vermillion is Founder and CEO of RMV Technology Group, LLC, a NASA Industry Partner and 3rd Party ESD Materials Testing, Training and Consulting Company.
